Q. Can non-CSU students participate in CSU IP?

A. No. Students must be enrolled at a CSU to participate. Only students who are currently enrolled at a CSU or community college students planning to transfer to a CSU may apply.

Q. Can freshmen and sophomores study abroad with CSU IP?

A. Freshmen are not eligible to participate in CSU IP. Sophomores are eligible to participate in the majority of programs. When searching for programs using the Program Discovery tool, select Sophomore under Class Standing and this will provide you with a list of all programs open to sophomore students.

Q. Can graduate students study abroad with CSU IP?

A. Yes. Graduate students are eligible to participate in some, but not all programs. When searching for programs using the Program Discovery tool, select Graduate under Class Standing and this will provide you with a list of all programs open to graduate students. Some programs allow graduate students to participate, but only for undergraduate credit; if this is the case, it is noted on the program brochure page.

Q. I am a student at a community college and plan to transfer to the CSU. Am I eligible to apply to IP?

A. Yes. Most programs accept transfer students (exceptions: Korea and Japan). Transfer students who are admitted to a CSU IP program will be required to submit proof of acceptance to a CSU campus in order to participate.

Q. I am currently an International Student at the CSU. Am I eligible to apply to IP?

A. Yes. International students are eligible to participate in CSU IP. However, some restrictions apply to specific programs, such as Japan. Make sure to do your research and contact the IP Coordinator on your campus if you have questions.

Q. I do not speak a language other than English. Can I still study abroad?

A. Yes. IP offers a number of programs in which classes are offered in English and which require no prior foreign language study. When searching for programs using the Program Discovery tool, select None under Language Prerequisite and this will provide you with a list of all programs which do not require you to have taken any foreign language.

Q. I am a native speaker of the language required for the program I have selected. Do I need to have met the language course requirements to be eligible, or can I submit the results of a proficiency test?

A. Native speakers do not have to meet the language course requirements. However, you are required to submit a foreign language recommendation completed by a faculty member at the time of application and also may be asked to submit the results of a language proficiency test upon acceptance to IP. Consult your IP Coordinator for suggestions on who to contact for your specific language evaluation.

Q. Do students have to have a declared major to apply to CSU IP?

A. Students can apply to IP without having declared a major, but they must declare a major in order to participate. Students who apply to IP as undeclared will be required to show proof of having declared a major upon acceptance to the program.
