Q. Will I have health insurance coverage while I am studying abroad with CSU IP?
A. Yes. Included in your prepaid program cost is an Accident and Sickness insurance which covers you while you study abroad. This insurance in only valid outside the US and is considered a primary medical policy. The policy includes a major medical provision with a $0 deductible, and an accidental death benefit. We emphasize that many of the host countries require students to purchase local coverage, which provides students with additional coverage. Q. Can I opt out of the CSU study abroad health insurance?
A. No. California State University requires that all study abroad students use the California State University Risk Management Authority (CSURMA) Foreign Travel Insurance Program.
Q. What if I have an emergency while I am abroad?
A. If you have a life-threatening emergency, contact the local emergency services immediately (police, fire, ambulance). Then, contact the on-site, International Programs center staff or the CSU Resident Director. Additional Health and Safety information will be given to you at the time of your pre-departure orientation. 
 
In the event of a non-life threatening emergency, contact the on-site, International Programs center staff or the CSU Resident Director. You will be given their contact information at the pre-departure orientation and you should keep it in a safe place where you can refer to it if necessary. Program their numbers into your cell phone for quick reference. The local staff at your overseas center are best equipped to provide immediate and appropriate assistance in the event of an emergency.
Q. What happens in the case of health, safety, or security issues in my host county?
A. Your safety and security are of utmost concern. No place, in California or abroad, can be guaranteed to be safe. The CSU International Programs monitors the U.S. State Department Travel Alerts and Warnings, Overseas Security Advisory Council information, updates from our partners abroad and alerts from our medical insurance/emergency assistance company for issues that could jeopardize your health, safety, or security abroad. Based on available information CSU IP does its best to maintain a safe learning environment for students. In rare cases, CSU IP may make the decision to move students or suspend a study abroad program and bring students home from the program site.
